Bryan v. Illustrator

Most people that know me, know I'm not a huge fan of Illustrator. The word "hate" is usually peppered in a few times when I talk about it.

There were definitely some moments of frustration while working on this, but the end result makes me happy. Once I got a work flow down, got my palettes set up, and came to terms with Illustrator's weird way of doing some things, it's not so bad. You get those nice clean lines that only Bézier curves can create; being totally scalable is pretty cool as well.

For some reason I really get a kick out of turning on outline mode, which can also be pretty handy for those hard to grab shapes. It looks like a paint by number.

Gallery Girls • Steam Punk

Some new ones from the Gallery Girls event last night. I managed to get some good ones. This first one was my favorite of the evening.

Don't forget to read the rules!

I was going to enter this in the Threadess Loves Horror contest, but I realized too late that I used too many colors. I felt like I wasn't using too many, but I still had thirteen in the end; the limit is eight. I don't care though, I got a good piece out of it. I've never really drawn much blood and gore. It's actually pretty fun. It was interesting trying to decide how much was too much; where that line was. It is a picture of a zombie eating brains after all.

Should this have won, I would have to make a proper vector image out of this.I think I want to, but that also means I'll have to face my nemesis, Adobe Illustrator in a battle of wills. Who will win?

Buildings

Did a little bit of drawing in the city on Saturday. I think I need to get a couple finer pens for the more distant lines when doing these smaller drawings. It would definitely help increase the sense of depth. I like doing these smaller drawings instead of trying to fill up the page when I'm doing environments; you don't have to spend too long on a particular view.

Good thing I'm lazy

Alright, not so bad. I've replaced all of the images from my blog. I don't think it's exactly the same, but for the most part my blog is back to it's original state. I gave up on the first post; too many images to track down. I don't like to post without an image, so here's one I had lying around that I like.

WIP

Here's a new one I'm working on. I don't usually post WIPs, but thanks to Google+ my blog has become a WIP, and I just wanted to give an update on the reconstruction project. I've managed to get everything back up through most of 2009 so far.

WTF Google?

Well, it would appear that all my images have been deleted from my blog?! In my Google+ albums there was one named "The Art of Bryan Young" which I did not create, so I assumed that Google just pulled in all the pictures from my blog. Well I didn't really need all of my blog pictures in my Google+ album, so I deleted it. Turns out, it was all of the actual content of my blog. No warning that I was deleting the entire contents of my blog. Pretty lame to loose years of posts. I've replaced the images for this year's posts at least. Maybe eventually I can get everything back up. It seems that this has happened to A LOT of people. Thanks Google :(

Here are some new ones from Dr Sketchy's yesterday to get it started again. What a crock.

More kids

More practice drawing kids. This reminds me of myself as a young game nerd. Except when I was a kid the only handhelds we had were those crappy LCD games. Lame!

Samurai!

I found a samurai book in the bargin bin at the bookstore a few years ago, full of color pictures of people in historic samurai and geisha outfits. Score! So much good stuff in there. I borrowed this costume from the book. I'm pretty happy with how this one came out.

Drawing kids is hard!

Two posts in one day?! I've been practicing drawing little kids lately for a project my friend wants to work on. I've never spent much time drawing kids. It's crazy how easy it is to get the proportions of the face wrong, and make them look like a grown up with a giant forehead. This one's heading in the right direction though.

Portal 2

Oh how I love Portal 2. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. I don't think I'm finished with this, but I needed to put it down for a while. I'm pretty happy with the way P-Body came out, but Atlas still needs some work.

First post of the New Year

Two months without a post. Where does the time go? Well, here are a couple new ones anyway.

I made this one as a Christmas gift for my friend. I'm pretty happy with the way this one came out. As usual, I was going to keep it "simple", but start getting some detail in one area, then I feel like I need to add some detail to another area, and so it goes.

I've had this sketch laying around for a while and finally got around to putting some color on it during my Christmas vacation. The left side of her jacket needs a bit of work, but I was just messing around anyway.

I was messing around with the blending modes for the paint texture layer and got this. You can get some interesting results just by trying the different modes. I never would have picked this palette on my own. I liked the way it looked, so I thought I'd throw it up here.
