Life drawing at UC Berkeley

After way too long without a regular life drawing session to go to, I finally found out about the drop-in sessions at UC Berkeley on Fridays and Saturdays. I hadn't really done any figure drawing since the Gallery Girls session in September, so it took me a while to get in the groove. It didn't help that the model was doing all kinds of crazy contorted, and lying poses. The lying pose tends to be the bane of a lot of artists I know, including myself. It really takes you out of the standing figure comfort zone.

Bombshell!

Here's a pinup girl I've been working on for a friend of mine. He wanted something similar to one you might find on the side of a WWII era plane. He asked me if I could do a cute girl, riding a bomb, with a beer. Sounded like fun, and not something I normally do. I ended up spending a lot longer on it than I first intended, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

Saturday in Santa Cruz

Here are a couple of sketches from a little road trip down to Santa Cruz on Saturday. Getting to see all of the sea lions under the pier was really cool. Being on the boardwalk made me want to watch The Lost Boys again.

Behold a Black Latex Horse

Dr Sketchy's is always a little on the risque side, but this week took the cake. Halfway through the session the model Daisy trotted out (no pun intended) "Scion Pony", a 6ft. tall dude in fetish horse gear. Only in San Francisco! ;)

New Colors!

Been super busy at work lately. Too many icons! I get to start working on the new 3ds Max icons next week though, so that should be fun. Here are a couple new Colors! paintings.

Last long pose session and Gallery Girls

Last one from our long pose sessions. Love that costume!

Some sketches from the latest Gallery Girls event. Egyptian theme this time. (Like you couldn't tell.) I know I've said it before, but if you live in the Bay Area check it out. The next event is in September, and the theme is going to be a circus sideshow. Sounds interesting.

Painting group 6 hour pose

Sunday sketchin'

A couple from Sunday afternoon. It was so nice out, I couldn't just sit around the house all day.

Dr. Sketchy's and Saturday session

Decided to bust out the pencils for Saturday's figure drawing session. I really like getting to finesse and carve out the lines when I use a pencil. A nice change of pace from my usual ink drawings. Although I find I waste more time noodling the drawing than I would if I was using ink; mostly because I can.

I was having an off night at Dr. Sketchy's; got there late and got stuck in the back row. Even though there weren't a lot a people there, there were enough to obstruct the model on a lot of poses. I won't be making that mistake again. I finally started to get warmed up by the time the session was over (of course).

More Colors!

A couple new Colors! paintings. I've come to realize the DS isn't going to be bright enough to paint outside in the sun. Bit of a bummer. I'll have to try seeking out a shady places to paint from. The one of the neighbors backyard was done from my relatively shaded back stairs.

It begins!

7.19.11 This isn't the original first post. All of the images on my blog accidentally got deleted recently. Let's reboot with a sketch I love that I've never posted.
